A father who was shot in a street in Hove may have been killed as part of a dispute between two Albanian families, police have said.
Xhem Krasniqi, 31, was hit once in the abdomen after a gunman opened fire in Church Road on Saturday.
Mr Krasniqi's brother and nephew were also shot at but not hit.
Sussex Police said officers knew the name of the gunman and it is believed the men all knew each other. All ports have been notified of his identity.
Det Ch Insp Jeff Riley said: "The initial indication is that there's a personal dispute between some members of two families and that this has escalated dramatically, leading to Xhem's tragic death."
The married scaffolder, who lived in Kent, was visiting family in Brighton with his wife and two young children when he was shot.
He, his brother and nephew were walking towards the offender in Church Road, at its junction with Selborne Road, when shots were fired at the three men at 23:30 BST.
Mr Krasniqi was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton but died just after 01:00.
