'Missed opportunities' to catch paedophile priest Gordon Rideout

An Anglican priest who has been found guilty of child abuse also faced trial in 1972 when accused of similar offences, it has emerged.

Canon Gordon Rideout, 74, from East Sussex, who is now retired, was found guilty of 36 separate sex offences by a jury at Lewes Crown Court for offences committed in the 1960s and 1970s.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

However, there were several missed opportunities to bring him to justice, including in 1972 when was tried by court martial for indecent assault, but acquitted.
