A man has been charged with wasting police time after what police have said was a hoax 999 call about a firearms offence in Surrey.

Surrey Police said the force received the call from the Merstham area on Wednesday night.

Officers then searched the Merstham area and also addresses Merstham, Crawley in West Sussex, and Mitcham in south London.

Police said the man was due to appear before magistrates later this month.

Det Con Kerry Akehurst said calls involving firearms were always taken extremely seriously by Surrey Police and required a specific response by officers from several specialist units.
