A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of producing malicious content, after tweets were sent to Wigan footballer Callum McManaman.

A tackle on Sunday by the 21-year-old on Newcastle's Massadio Haidara saw the defender taken to hospital.

The Football Association (FA) confirmed it would not be taking action against the Wigan forward.

The 17-year-old boy from Ashington, Northumberland, has been issued with a fixed penalty notice.

In a statement, the FA said no further action would be taken against McManaman, as one of the match officials saw the "coming together, though not the full extent of the challenge".

The decision prompted an angry reaction from Newcastle with managing director Derek Llambias claiming the disciplinary process was "not fit for purpose".

Haidara, 20, is expected to have a second scan on his injuries next week.
