A light aircraft used by a gang convicted of drug-trafficking has sold on eBay for £17,200.

Leicestershire Police sold the plane on behalf of Northamptonshire Police after it was seized under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The Zenair Zodiac aircraft was used to transport cocaine with a street value of £1.7m.

Any money raised from the sale can be used for policing activities and community projects, a spokesman said.

Not airworthy

The plane was confiscated by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, which said drugs were taken by road from Amsterdam to France, where they were loaded onto the aircraft and flown into Northamptonshire.

The aircraft, which has a new price tag of about £30,000, was sold for spares or repair, and did not come with any keys.

The description read: "This aircraft is currently out of commission and needs considerable work before an airworthiness certificate can be issued."

Northamptonshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Adam Simmonds said: "The sale of the plane and the interest from the public we've seen has been tremendous.

"It sold well above the reserve price and more than we expected to get. This sends a strong message to criminals that we will seize and sell their assets."

Five men from Corby pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import Class A drugs. Christopher Andrew McGlone, 27, was jailed for five years; James Martin McGlone, 30, six years; Wayne Burgess, 36, four years; Adel Chouhaib, 33, 10 years; and Richard Sweeney Murray, 48, four years. Abdelilah Hilali, 34, of Marsham Street, London, was sentenced to eight years.
