Locomotive re-painted for steam train anniversary

The name plate has been tried out for size on th Dominion of Canada

A Doncaster-built locomotive is being repainted in preparation for the 75th anniversary of a steam train landmark.

The Dominion of Canada is being decked out in garter blue colours at the National Railway Museum in Shildon, County Durham.

It has been shipped from Canada for the July anniversary to mark 75 years since its sister locomotive the Mallard broke the world record for steam traction.

Both engines will be at the National Railway Museum in York for the event.

On 3 July 1938 the Doncaster-built 4468 Mallard broke the world speed record by reaching 126 mph.

Exactly 75 years later the Mallard, the Dominion of Canada and four other surviving A4 class locomotives will all be together at the North Yorkshire museum.

As well as being painted in the same colours as the Mallard to replace the old British Rail green, the Dominion of Canada is getting a Canadian bell and chime whistle and a replica cabside crest featuring the Royal Coat of Arms of Canada.
