A lorry was blown over and traffic disrupted as gale-force winds of up to 70mph hit the north-east of England.

Durham Police warned drivers to take care after an HGV toppled over on the A1 near Chester-le-Street.

The driver was not hurt but the accident halted traffic on the southbound carriageway.

The Highways Agency advised those driving high-sided vehicles and motorcycles or towing caravans to take care in strong winds.

Major problems were also reported on the A177 into Durham when a tree blew over down blocking the road near Whinney Hill.
