Snow disruption warning issued for Devon and Cornwall

Hundreds of drivers were stranded on Haldon Hill in wintry weather in 2009 and 2010

An amber warning of severe weather has been issued by the Met Office for the South West.

A band of snow, heavy in places, is expected to affect the region on Friday.

Accumulations of 5-10cm (2-4 ins) could occur "quite widely", with 15cm (6ins) falling in some areas within the space of a few hours.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a number of contingency plans have been put in place.

The snow is expected to hit the region at about midnight, with Devon the most likely area to be affected.

It could potentially cause disruption in areas such as the A38 at Haldon Hill near Exeter and preparations have been put in place by police, Devon County Council and the Highways Agency.

A severe weather response plan was put in place for Haldon Hill after hundred of motorists were stranded in 2009 and again in 2010.

Police said any important updates would be added to its force Twitter account and Devon County Council said it had more than 260 snow wardens "on standby" with local self help plans.
