The Vice Chancellor of the University of East Anglia has criticised Government plans to crack down on bogus foreign students.
The proposals would see students interviewed by UK Border Agency officials rather than using paper-based or online checks to confirm their status.
Professor Edward Acton believes this could deter applications and ultimately hurt the British economy.
The government says abuse is rife under the current system of checks.
