Ipswich docks pontoon death: Driver denies manslaughter

Mr Wightman was working near the former Tolly Cobbold brewery when the accident happened

A lorry driver from Essex has denied killing a 52-year-old man who was crushed to death while a pontoon was being unloaded at Ipswich docks.

Neville Wightman, of Ipswich, died after the section of pontoon fell off a lorry at Cliff Quay last year.

Paul Napier, 48, of Inglenook, Clacton, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court where he denied manslaughter and a health and safety offence.

He has been released on bail and is due to stand trial next April.

The incident happened at about 18:00 GMT on Friday, 16 December on the quayside near the former Tolly Cobbold brewery.

Another man, Stephen Burden from Lowestoft, was treated for serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The Crown Prosecution Service has dropped a third charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
