Crash scene at Crags Road Crags Road was closed in both directions for several hours

Two young sisters have been killed in a car crash in Derbyshire.

Police were called to Crags Road in Creswell at about 16:45 BST on Monday to reports of a two-car collision.

A five-year-old girl and a 22-month-old girl were fatally injured when the Peugeot 106 their mother was driving was in collision with a Citroen C2.

Derbyshire Police said the girls' mother, 29, from Worksop in Nottinghamshire and another sister, seven, suffered minor injuries.

The Citroen driver, a 23-year-old woman, also from the Worksop area, suffered an arm injury.

The five-year-old girl attended the Priory Church of England Primary School in Worksop.

In a statement released by the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, a school spokesman said: "We learnt today that last night's fatal car accident involved children from the Priory School, Worksop.

"One of our Year One children died in the accident along with her 22-month-old sister. All the Governors, staff and children have been told about the tragic events this afternoon.

"As a school, we will be supporting our children and families during these difficult days. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole family and those close to them."

The road was closed in both directions for several hours and Derbyshire Police has asked anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the force.
