Police 'engage' with football fans to lower matchday arrests

Help

Officers in the West Midlands have adopted a new approach to policing football fans on matchdays in a bid to reduce the incidents of hooliganism.

PC Tim Gant is part of a specialist football unit that has begun to talk more to supporters as the force scales back its presence at venues across the region.

"It's about getting them onside," PC Gant said.

"We've got to remember it's a tiny percentage of fans who cause trouble nowadays.

"The days of the mass disorder hopefully are over. There are still isolated incidents and it's those we want to get on top of."
