Diabetic pilots attempt national formation record

The pilots have campaigned for change for the last 10 years

Six diabetic pilots have attempted to set a national formation speed record between Derby and Southampton.

The men took off from Tollerton airport, in Nottingham, at 11:00 BST and flew over eight towns and cities in a D formation.

The group has been celebrating changes to aviation law which now allows people with diabetes to fly planes.

The men landed at Goodwood Airport, Chichester, at about 14:00 BST. The record still has to be verified.

The airmen have either lost professional flying careers on diagnosis of diabetes, or previously had restrictions applied to flying activities or career ambitions.

Pilot Damian Fessey said: "We had to train hard for it but it's also a celebration for the change of policy by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) by six guys who have campaigned together for the past 10 years."

Their UK Diabetes Formation Flight speed record attempt was the first of its kind in the UK, the group said.
