A vicar who is attempting to walk from Surrey to Holy Island on the Northumberland coast is half way through his journey.

The Reverend Bruce Nicole set off on his 360-mile (580km) trip from St Michael's Church, Camberley, to Lindisfarne on 10 June.

He has so far reached Sheffield in his month-long walk.

He hopes to raise thousands of pounds towards the £2.6m modernisation of the Victorian church building.

"The blisters are under control and nothing's bleeding," he said.

"I've not done too badly - there's been a bit of rain but nothing heavy enough that I have had to put on the heavy duty weather gear.

"The rhythm of his week has been broken up a bit because I had a conference in the middle."

Mr Nicole said he had arranged to stay with vicars at churches along the route.

He has kept parishioners updated on his progress via a blog.
