Open Farm Sunday welcomes public

It is hoped that by opening its doors, farms will encourage people to find out where their food is from

Hundreds of farms across the country, including 36 in Devon and Cornwall, have opened to the public on Sunday.

It is hoped the annual Open Farm Sunday will encourage people to "discover the story behind food".

A national poll by organisers, Linking Environment And Farming, revealed 59% of 16 to 23-year-olds surveyed did not know where butter came from.

Event organiser Caroline Drummond said farms are a "very important part of our whole infrastructure."

Ms Drummond said: "It's where our food is produced and where a lot of the biodiversity is hanging out really."

Open Farm Sunday was introduced in the UK in 2006, with more than 750,000 people visiting farms across the country last year.
