The jury has been sworn in for the trial of a Hertfordshire man accused of causing the death of a Cambridge University student by careless driving.

Mingwei Tan, 20, from Singapore, was dragged for a mile under a vehicle that hit her near Belsize Park Tube station, north-west London on 30 September 2010.

Shahriar Firouzian, 52, of Harrow Way, Watford, Hertfordshire, denies causing death by careless driving.

The trial at Blackfriars Crown Court, London, was adjourned until Tuesday.

Miss Tan was found lying in a road in Haverstock Hill, north London, with fatal injuries.

Appearing in court, Mr Firouzian spoke only to confirm his name through an interpreter.

Jurors will visit the scene where Miss Tan is believed to have been struck, in Pond Street, Hampstead Heath, north London, on Wednesday.

The court heard that Miss Tan's family was unlikely to attend the trial, which is expected to last seven days.

Hamish Reid, prosecuting, said: "The deceased was a student in this country and her family are from Singapore.

"They have not come over for the trial and I don't think they are expected to attend."
