Scunthorpe children's ward nurses suspended

The hospital trust said the child's family were being kept informed of the inquiry's progress

Four nurses and a healthcare support worker have been suspended from the children's ward at Scunthorpe General Hospital, the BBC understands.

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Trust started an inquiry after allegations were made that a baby was restrained on Disney Ward.

Humberside Police confirmed they were also investigating the incident.

The NHS trust said: "We can confirm an incident has occurred which the trust is investigating."

Wendy Booth, the trust's head of governance, added: "We are keeping the family fully informed. It would not therefore be appropriate to comment further at this stage."

Disney Ward caters for patients aged from a few days up to 16 years, who have a variety of medical and surgical needs.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: "Police can confirm that a complaint is being investigated following an incident at Scunthorpe General Hospital.

"This is currently in the very early stages and police are working closely with the NHS trust to fully establish the circumstances of the case."

Scunthorpe Labour MP Nic Dakin said: "We have to be assured that the hospital has taken the steps that it's needed to take today in suspending these staff.

"It's also ensured that the safety and wellbeing of patients is paramount and we need to be very patient now and let matters take their course."
