Landlord fights for East Midlands cheese Stilton name

Help

A pub landlord in the village of Stilton in Cambridgeshire is challenging a law that states the cheese with the same name can only be made in the East Midlands.

Liam McGiven, who runs The Bell Inn, said it was "ridiculous" they could produce a cheese in Stilton but could not name it after the village.

Nigel White, from the Stilton Cheesemakers' Association, said the blue veined cheese was a "valuable property" and its status had to be protected.

Since Stilton was given the status in 1996, it can only be produced in five diaries across Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Mr McGiven said he was prepared to go to the European Union to win the right to take the name.
