Lifeguards are extending their cover of some beaches in Devon and Cornwall.

The RNLI lifeguard season ends on 25 September but 9 beaches in Cornwall and three in Devon have extended their patrols to the 30 October.

The beaches which include Gwithian, Polzeath and Croyde, will continue to provide cover at weekends and during the October school holiday.

The RNLI said it was reacting to public demand. It added that Fistral Beach would be covered throughout October.

The charity said more people wanted to spend time in the water, later in the year, and it wanted to provide cover at the busiest beaches.

Lifeguard patrols will be extended in Cornwall at Porthmeor, Gwithian, Praa Sands, Porthtowan, Perranporth, Watergate, Polzeath and Widemouth Bay.

In Devon, lifeguards will be on patrol at Bantham, Croyde and Woolacombe.
