Replacing third rail 'too costly'


Snow and ice brought the South East rail network to a standstill last winter when the severe weather conditions paralysed the third rail that powers the trains.

MPs on the transport committee had recommended replacing it with overhead cables, but ministers have ruled out the idea, saying it would be too expensive.
