Snow warning on North West motorways

M60 The snow covered lanes on the M60 earlier - drivers are being warned

Fresh snowfall is creating travel problems across north-west England.

Heavy snow has hit motorways in Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester.

Driving conditions are hazardous on the M6 near Orrell and on the M62 between Simister and Ainley Top.

The Met Office has issued warnings to commuters to be prepared for snow, sleet and freezing rain which could lead to icy stretches in certain parts of the region.

Many parts of the North West were hit by snow and ice in mid to late December, with many services grinding to a halt.

Public transport was affected, some businesses were forced to close and many motorists were trapped in their vehicles for hours as the snow caused chaos on the roads.
