Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes has been honoured by London South Bank University.

The university said it wanted to recognise her "exceptional achievements in British sport" and her charitable work since retiring from athletics.

About 300 people watched Holmes receive her Honorary Fellowship at Southwark Cathedral.

Holmes, from Hildenborough near Tonbridge, won both the 800m and 1500m events at the 2004 games in Athens.

She was joined at the ceremony by others honoured for their achievements in culture, science and engineering.

Since retiring from athletics in 2005, Holmes has helped young people achieve their goals in sport through the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.
