Children injured as tornado sweeps tent away

2 September 2014 Last updated at 20:40 BST

Three children were injured when a tent they were sleeping in was lifted off the ground and carried across a campsite by a mini-tornado.

Steve Gardner and his wife Gail watched as the tent flew 30ft (9.1m) across the field, leaving Oliver, 10, Kate, eight, and Lily, two, with head injuries.

The family, from Whitley Bay, were on a week-long holiday in the Lake District at the time.

Mr Gardner told BBC Radio 5 live's Drive: "It hit the ground and there was shoes, there were toys, all our belongings just scattered around it... Gail was screaming."
