Chess and politics 'are linked'

15 August 2014 Last updated at 11:44 BST

There is now an all-party parliamentary group on chess, which will be chaired by Labour MP Yasmin Qureshi.

Malcolm Pein, the Daily Telegraph's chess correspondent, told the Today programme that the aim of this group is to not only promote the game but to "get it played in parliament a bit more".

Labour MP Maria Eagle explained the connection between chess and politics.

She said they are both "battles" between you and your opponent, both of whom are trying to win, and it "teaches you how to think in a particular way".
