'Skull Cracker' Michael Wheatley spotted in London

6 May 2014 Last updated at 20:01 BST

One of Britain's most notorious armed robbers, who absconded from an open prison, is said to have been spotted in south-west London on Monday evening.

Police say Michael Wheatley - nicknamed the Skull Cracker - was seen by a member of the public but officers have failed to find him.

Wheatley, who is serving 13 life sentences, went on the run after being given day release from an open prison on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent on Saturday.

Robert Hall reports.
