NHS 'pleased' with Winter Friends despite missing target

NHS England says it is "very pleased" with the Winter Friends scheme despite being far off their recruitment target.

The campaign, launched in November, encouraged people to check on elderly friends and neighbours over the winter months.

The aim was to get 100,000 signed up as volunteers, but only 2,000 have applied so far.

Paul Nuki, Chief Editor of NHS Choices, told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "I do think that the 2,000 we've recruited probably represent 5% of those that are vulnerable."
