Scottish independence: Treasury makes debt pledge

13 January 2014 Last updated at 22:39 GMT

The UK Treasury says that should Scots vote to leave the UK, it will honour all UK government debt issued up to the date of Scottish independence.

The move was aimed at removing the risk of default resulting from any dispute about Scotland's share of the debt and giving reassurance to the financial markets.

Supporters of Scottish independence say their campaign has been boosted by the Treasury's promise.

Robert Peston reports.
