The most wide-ranging inquiry into institutional child abuse undertaken in the UK has opened in Northern Ireland.

The Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA) is examining claims of sexual abuse, neglect and mistreatment made against state, voluntary and church-run organisations over a 73 year period.

The senior counsel to the inquiry, Christine Smith, said many victims had "waited years for this day to come".
