Young and no job: 'I felt worthless'

2 January 2014 Last updated at 00:06 GMT

More than three quarters of a million young people in the UK believe they have nothing to live for, according to a study published on Thursday.

The Prince's Trust charity says that almost a third of young long-term unemployed people have contemplated suicide.

They say urgent action is needed to prevent the jobless becoming the hopeless.

Chris Newell, now 23, spent six years trying to find work, during which time he suffered depression and tried to kill himself.

He spoke to the BBC's Michael Buchanan about what led him to that point and how he was able to recover.
