Society of Editors: Press racism claims are nonsense

31 December 2013 Last updated at 13:56 GMT

A senior media figure has defended the British press against accusations that some articles have been racist towards Romanian and Bulgarian migrants.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry claimed some UK media coverage was "racist" and "xenophobic" towards Romanian citizens.

However Bob Satchwell, The Executive Director of the Society of Editors, said the accusations were "nonsense".

Mr Satchwell told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "What the Romanian Foreign Ministry has got to understand is that we do have a tradition of papers that are raucous and full of heavy comment which reflects their readership."
