Cloughmills assault: Man critically ill in hospital

A man remains in a critical condition in hospital after he was assaulted at a pub in County Antrim.

The 34-year-old was attacked at the bar on Main Street, Cloughmills, shortly before 02:40 GMT on Monday.

The pub is at a crossroads and police investigating the assault closed Main Street, Loughill Road, Drumadoon Road and Culcrum Road.

The Mayor of Ballymoney, John Finlay, said he was "shocked" by what had happened in his home village.

"Cloughmills is a very quiet village, and then to have this assault in the early hours of the morning is a real tragedy.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with, obviously, the family of the man who's seriously injured, and we hope that he'll make a full recovery," Mr Finlay added.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the attack to contact them in Coleraine police station on 0845 600 8000.
