How do you safely match stray dogs to new owners?

Staff at dog shelters across the UK assess all the animals brought in and check they are suitable to be given to new owners.

The dogs are 'socialised', and staff ensure that food and toys can be removed and that the animals can be touched, before they are re-housed.

But how difficult is it to get the match right?
