The head teacher at the school of a four-year-old girl who was mauled to death by her pet dog has said that the school is "devastated and saddened" by the incident.

Lexi Branson was attacked at her home in Leicestershire. The bulldog, which is not a banned breed, was stabbed to death during attempts to save the little girl.

David Williams, head teacher of Christ Church and St Peter's C of E primary school, where Lexi had just begun, said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Lexi's family at this extremely difficult time."
