Warning over future power shortages

16 October 2013 Last updated at 23:01 BST

A report commissioned for the prime minister is warning of more power shortages in the years to come, linked to the closure of older power plants and the slow progress in building new ones.

Last week the National Grid, which operates Britain's electricity network, warned of a higher risk of blackouts this winter.

The government has given reassurances that "the lights are not going to go out".

John Moylan reports.
