Hilary Benn: Bins policy an issue for local councils

The shadow communities secretary has urged his opposite number to focus on "his big responsibly, which is that we build more houses" and let local councils deal with the issue of refuse collection.

Hilary Benn's comments came after it emerged that, under new planning guidance, new housing developments in England should have sufficient space to store household bins out of view of the street.

Eric Pickles said the proliferation of wheelie bins had created a "blot on the landscape".

But Mr Benn argued that: "The real problem is with existing houses".
