John Lloyd, creator of Not the Nine O'Clock News, has said the death of his friend Mel Smith is a "great loss" and a "tragedy".

The comic actor and writer Smith died of a heart attack, aged 60.

Smith formed a lasting partnership with Griff Rhys Jones with whom he set up the independent television company, Talkback Productions.

Lloyd said that "Mel could play a punk rocker or a politician and seem very real".
