Second homes 'create great loss'

26 June 2013 Last updated at 09:48 BST

There are more than 250,000 second homes in Britain, according to the latest statistics.

Enemies of the second home claim that local people get pushed out of the housing market and, in a wider less tangible way, the life of local communities is dulled by empty homes and are unlit on winters nights.

The Today programme's Mike Thomson, reports from a village near Weymouth in Dorset where the number of second homes has doubled over the last ten years.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 26 June 2013.
