Coronation Street star William Roache appears in court over rape allegations

The Coronation Street actor Bill Roache has appeared at Preston Magistrates Court over allegations of raping a 15-year-old girl.

The 81-year-old, who has played Ken Barlow in the ITV soap since its launch, was arrested this month and was later charged with two counts of rape against his alleged victim in 1967.

Roache strenuously denies the allegations.

The BBC's Judith Moritz said the hearing was brief and the case was committed to Preston Crown Court.
