Plebgate: Police Federation 'shocked' by arrests

20 December 2012 Last updated at 18:05 GMT

The Police Federation has said it is "shocked" by the arrests of two men in connection with an incident at Downing Street involving the former government chief whip Andrew Mitchell.

Mr Mitchell quit his post after it was alleged he called police "plebs". CCTV footage has now cast doubt on the original police accounts of the row.

The Federation's chairman Paul McKeever promised to apologise to Mr Mitchell if it is found that he was the victim of a serious injustice.

But he said the organisation had taken "a very clear line" nationally not to call for Mr Mitchell's resignation.
