Welby calls for winnings to be donated to church

The next Archbishop of Canterbury has suggested people who made money by betting on his appointment should donate their winnings to community causes.

The Rt Rev Justin Welby made the call on social networking site Twitter, as "partly a joke."

Speaking to the BBC at a food parcel distribution session, he pointed out: "We may not like that [these] are necessary but they are, and they need to be paid for."
