Councils stockpile salt for cold snap

Councils in England and Wales say they are ready to cope with icy road conditions as the first cold snap of the season sets in.

The Local Government Association (LGA) said hundreds of gritters were on stand-by to treat roads as required.

Some have bought new equipment to avoid being caught out by a cold snap, and about 1.3 million tonnes of salt have been set aside in council depots.

It came as snow caused hazardous conditions in parts of Scotland.
