There was drama, history and a few laughs at the opening ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics.

Towards the end of the evening seven young athletes carried the torch around the stadium, and lit the symbolic flame, which will stay alight throughout the Games, until it is extinguished at the closing ceremony.

But last night was just the beginning, as BBC sports editor David Bond reports.
