Newspaper review: Papers reflect on cinema shootings

A look at the first editions of the UK papers

The shootings at a cinema in Colorado is the lead for many of the papers.

The Times has the headline "Smiling killer behind the Batman massacre". For the Sun, it is "Batman madman".

The Daily Mail's headline is "I'm The Joker!" - the paper says suspect James Holmes made the "sick boast" after he was arrested.

It says he had put on a gas mask and bullet-proof vest like the movie's villain Bane and dyed his hair red to resemble Batman's nemesis The Joker.

Premiere cancelled

The Sun says rigorous bag searches were carried out at the Odeon West End cinema in Leicester Square on Friday.

This, it says, was amid fears that weapons could be smuggled inside to stage a copycat attack.

The Times reports that the premiere in Paris of the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises was cancelled.

The Daily Telegraph says the Colorado shootings have left the future of the film in doubt and thrown its carefully choreographed launch into disarray.

Games brands

The Independent and the Financial Times lead on the controversy over the use of branding for the London Olympics.

The FT quotes the London Mayor, Boris Johnson, as describing such policing of Olympic brands as "insanity".

A former marketing director for the International Olympic Committee speaks to the Independent.

Michael Payne tells the paper that, for example, the rules were never intended to shut down the flower shop that has a window display of Olympic rings.

Race history

There is huge interest in Bradley Wiggins, widely expected to become on Sunday the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France.

The Daily Express says he stands on the brink of a sporting victory that will propel him into a global superstar.

For the Daily Mirror, he is not just on the cusp of winning a bike race - he is blowing away 109 years of history.

The Guardian says he looks destined to become the first Briton to win cycling's greatest prize.
