New contract for UK nuclear submarines

The government is going ahead with the next step towards replacing Trident with a new generation of nuclear submarines.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond is to announce a contract for Rolls Royce to develop the reactors needed to power nuclear submarines, but the government says a final decision on replacing Trident will not come until 2016.

The Liberal Democrats say a cheaper alternative should be found.
