  • Fabric technology
  • Lightweight fabrics with "heat and ventilation zones and "moisture management fibres" are said to help keep athletes cool by allowing sweat to evaporate off the skin.
  • Support suit
  • Compression suit technology first seen on Olympic swimmers has been developed for a range of disciplines from athletics and gymnastics to rowing. Webs of elastic fibres are said to help generate "explosive power, acceleration and endurance". Manufacturers say athletes feel like it is an "extension of their own skin".
  • Athlete's verdict
  • Triple jumper Phillips Idowu: "I love what Stella has done with the design. Looking good is psychologically important but my sprint suit is also technically advanced."
  • The Look
  • Designed by Stella McCartney, the outfits to be worn by more than 900 Team GB athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic Games follow a similar theme. Styles vary for competition, training and presentation kits. "Ultimately, we wanted the athletes to feel like a team and be proud with the identity we created," the designer said.
  • Design
  • Central theme is a deconstructed Union flag in blue, with red elements elsewhere on the kit. Stella McCartney says: "For me, it's one of the most beautiful flags in the world and it was important for me to stay true to that iconic design but also to modernise it and present it in a contemporary way."
  • Shoes
  • Performance shoes are about 25% lighter than those used in Beijing 2008. The manufacturers claim that for every 100g of weight saved, performance can be improved by up to 1%.
