Police forces in England and Scotland have received a number of calls reporting what is believed to have been a meteor.
Reports of a "bright light" and an "orange glow" came in across Britain at about 2140 GMT on Saturday amid fears a plane had crashed.
Steve Pugh filmed the meteor over Whitley Bay. He was with his family filming the Olympic Rainbow when his son spotted the light in the sky.
