US academic Peter Moskos sets out the case for flogging
An American academic has published a book in which he advocates the use of flogging as an alternative to jail.
Peter Moskos, a former police officer in Baltimore, says that no matter how barbaric flogging may seem, some criminals may actually choose corporal punishment in favour of losing their liberty.
He explained his ideas to BBC Radio 4's World at One.
