Lawyer Giovanni di Stefano held in Spain
An Italian lawyer dubbed the "devil's advocate" for representing a variety of high-profile criminals has been arrested in Spain on a British warrant.
Giovanni di Stefano, 55, was held in a mansion in Palma, on the island of Majorca, on Monday evening.
Mr Stefano has represented train robber Ronnie Biggs and advised the team that defended Saddam Hussein.
He is wanted by detectives at City of London police in connection with a lengthy fraud inquiry.
A City of London Police spokesman said: "[The arrest] was the result of a European Arrest Warrant issued at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on 31 January on matters relating to fraud, theft and money laundering.
"The investigation is being conducted by City of London Police's economic crime directorate who continue to liaise with the Spanish authorities with a view to bringing the arrested man to the UK."
Mr Stefano's clients have included Harold Shipman and Slobodan Milosevic.
He helped make legal history as part of the team which overturned the manslaughter conviction of tycoon Nicholas van Hoogstraten.
