Tensions are never far from the surface in the Middle East, so maintaining security in the Gulf is a priority for Britain and other western governments.
The Royal Navy plays a key role in protecting the water from mines.
Our defence correspondent Nick Childs joined the ship, HMS Middleton, to see the work involved.
