Prince Harry has paid tribute to those killed trying to escape communist East Germany across the Berlin Wall.

He laid a wreath at a memorial in the German capital's Bernauer Strasse, which contains one of the few remaining sections of the Berlin Wall.

Harry also visited the memorial to the Holocaust's 6 million Jewish victims and the nearby Brandenburg Gate.

The prince was in the city for a television fundraising gala at which he was honoured for his charity work.

The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 and dismantled in 1989.

It was estimated that more than 100 people were killed trying to escape East Germany over the wall.

A handwritten message attached to Harry's wreath read: "For all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of freedom. Harry."

The prince later toured the museum at the Holocaust memorial. He met staff and a Holocaust survivor who tells children about her experiences.

In 2005 Harry apologised after he wore a swastika armband and a badge of the German Wehrmacht, or defence force, on his collar to a fancy dress party.
